A Commitment to Excellence

Pearson Curriculum
We utilize the Pearson curriculum for our core subjects, however, each teacher supplements the materials with North Carolina, as well as worldwide subject matter that may be lacking in the texts. Language arts, spelling, science, social studies, and math are key subjects in which the students excel

Christian-Based Curriculum
We also use Abeka, the Christian-based curriculum company to provide our students with a broader view of the world. We also instruct students in additional co-curricular classes to enhance their holistic education.

Certified by North Carolina
QEI is certified by the State of North Carolina as a private school. We test our students annually using the nationally accepted ITBS standardized test. Our school provides a superior quality education for students in Kindergarten through Fifth grade.

Grades K4-K5

QEI offers a comprehensive kindergarten-readiness program (K4/K5) customized to enhance the learning abilities of kindergarten-ready children. These children learn through phonics-based instruction, alphabet, shapes and numbers recognition, and hands-on manual-dexterity training. Because we understand the importance of establishing a morning routine, our K4 and K5 begin each morning with our morning devotional time, complete with affirmations, reciting the alphabet, days of the week, months of the year and counting. QEI’s K4 and K5 Program of Study are designed to form a solid academic foundation. The curriculum emphasizes skills designed to build vocabulary and the fundamentals of written expression. Additional focus is placed on the importance of Bible, science, social studies, and the integration of concepts and skillsets that enhance future learning and development. Students at all grades also participate in physical education, dance, choir, art, and creative writing.

Grades 1-2

Our 1 & 2nd grade classes are combined and follow the Department of Public Instruction Course of Study. Students build upon their literary knowledge and begin to be fully immersed in mathematics, science and social studies. First grade students master understanding addition and subtraction, time (on analog clocks), as well as an introduction to multiplication and division along with other facts. While 1st grade develops those skills, 2nd grade master division facts, measurement, congruence and symmetry, as well as graphs data and probability. Both grade levels are exposed to an overview of social studies, including geography, our nation’s founding, black history, landforms and inventions and inventors.

Grades 3-5

Our 3rd through 5th grade classes are also combined. Though there is some academic overlap, the teacher is able to differentiate instruction, in accordance to the DPI Course of study by grade level. Students exhibit independence through learning how to take notes, outlining and writing 3 to 5 paragraph essays and exhibiting their knowledge of multiplication and division quick facts. All students enrolled in 3rd through 5th grades must complete a science fair project, an ecosystem project, as well as book reports each semester. Progress Reports and Homework

The purpose of homework for all grades is for independent practice and reinforcement of new and reviewed concepts. Homework is expected to be completed nightly and returned the next school day, unless the Teacher indicates another due date. Students are to complete their homework in their own handwriting. Homework should always be done neatly. The general time expectations for homework are:

  • K4 – 30 minutes
  • K5 – 45 minutes
  • 1st and 2nd Grade – 30 minutes
  • 3rd through 5th Grades – 1 hour

Parents are advised to read and sign off on the daily communication log that goes home with their child(ren). The Daily Communication Log will record homework and Teachers will make comments for parents regarding student behavior.
At the end of each quarter a report card is sent to parents of children in the Kindergarten Five through Fifth grades. For Students at the Kindergarten Four (k-4) level, assessments are conducted daily for the mastery of material. In the Spring of the School year (May) a final assessment is given to determine the students’ mastery of the materials taught throughout the year.

At the halfway point of each Academic Quarter, each Student is sent home with a progress report with samples of his/her work. Parents are expected to return the signed progress report to the teacher the following day. This is an excellent way for parents to assess their child’s progress. The report cards and progress reports are designed to inform the Parent(s) of Students’ participation and performance in school. Teachers are open to conversations with each Parent regarding his/her child’s development at QEI. Please schedule an appointment through email with your child’s teacher.

Testing

At the beginning of each school year, students are tested to ascertain their academic performance level. New Students are tested during the first few weeks of their enrollment at QEI. This testing is designed to provide the Teaching Staff with information regarding the Students’ academic strengths and weaknesses. At least annually, QEI students are assessed with the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. QEI Faculty and Staff have found that most children are eager to learn, and they are eager to demonstrate what they have learned, whether on tests or in some other arena. QEI Students are eager and capable of demonstrating their academic progress, one-on-one, and in Assemblies, including our Spring Open House Program and Graduation Exercises.
